On July 18, 2024, in Hanoi, the People’s Committee of Hai Phong City, the Department of Sports and Physical Training, Tien Phong Newspaper, and the Vietnam Golf Association held a press conference to announce the National Golf Championship 2024, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong. The tournament will take place from August 13-18 at Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong.
The National Golf Championship is the largest and oldest golf tournament in Vietnam and serves as the foundation for the national golf competition system established by the Vietnam Golf Association (VGA). First held in 2005, the National Golf Championship has become a prestigious and esteemed event that every Vietnamese golfer aspires to participate in.
Over nearly two decades of development, the National Golf Championship has undergone significant transformations, expanding its scale and improving its professional quality to adapt to the growth of golf in Vietnam. Notable positive changes include the expansion of the event to allow international players in 2008, which increased its competitive edge, and the introduction of a separate women’s division in 2012, evolving into a dedicated tournament for female golfers.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Phung Cong Suong, Editor-in-Chief of Tien Phong Newspaper and Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee, emphasized: “From the platform provided by the National Golf Championship, Vietnam’s top golfers have confidently stepped onto the continental stage to continue their journey toward new heights. Alongside prestigious golf tournaments and increasingly well-invested golf academies in Vietnam, the National Golf Championship is fulfilling its mission as a premier arena dedicated to nurturing, developing, and celebrating Vietnamese golf talent.”
At this time, due to the relatively small number of professional golfers in Vietnam, the National Golf Championship remains a key venue for amateur golfers to gain experience, learn, and refine their skills. Many outstanding figures in Vietnamese golf, such as Tran Le Duy Nhat, Nguyen Thai Duong, Truong Chi Quan, Ngo Bao Nghi, and Nguyen Thao My, won the national championship at a young age and used it as a stepping stone to pursue professional golf careers in subsequent years.
Mr. Nguyen Thai Duong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Vietnam Golf Association and Tournament Director, shared: “Golf is a new and unique sport, with amateur golfers training and striving to turn professional. Since golf in Vietnam is still developing, the number of professional golfers is not yet large. However, we take pride in our talented young amateur golfers, who are beginning to make significant marks both domestically and internationally. They offer an optimistic outlook for the future of Vietnamese golf as the current generation of amateurs matures and transitions into the professional ranks, contributing to a robust and high-quality professional golf scene.”

Aiming for the Development of Vietnamese Golf
The National Golf Championship 2024, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong brings together 150 golfers (120 men and 30 women) competing over 4 rounds of 18 holes (a total of 72 holes) at Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong (Vu Yen, Hai Phong). This will be the third consecutive year the National Golf Championship is held at this 18-hole, par 72 course, renowned for its unique and challenging design due to the natural marshland terrain. To ensure high professional standards, the National Golf Championship 2024, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong limits the maximum handicap for amateur players to 5.0 for men and 10.0 for women. The tournament will feature a cut after 36 holes, selecting the top 40 male golfers and 12 female golfers with the best scores and ties to continue competing for the championship.
To enhance competitiveness and excitement, the National Golf Championship 2024, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong boasts a prize fund of up to 1.2 billion VND, with 1 billion VND allocated to the men’s category and 200 million VND to the women’s category. Currently, the prize fund for the women’s category is the highest ever. This is also a positive sign for promoting and advancing elite women’s golf in Vietnam.

This year, with sponsorship from VinFast Trading and Services Co., Ltd., the tournament introduces an exciting Hole-in-One (HIO) system. Golfers who achieve an HIO on any of the 4 par 3 holes will win a VF9 car.
Continuing its mission to lay the foundation for the sustainable future of Vietnamese golf, the tournament will cover 100% of the entry fees for the reigning champion of the National Golf Championship and members of the national golf team (first-tier). Additionally, players under 18 years old (born on or after August 14, 2006) will receive a 50% discount on their participation fees.
